What is permanent outdoor lighting?

Permanent outdoor lighting is a track of individually addressable LED pucks mounted once, under your eaves or along your fascia, and left there year round. In daylight you barely see it. At night it does everything from soft warm white on the porch to full colour for a holiday or a game day, from an app on your phone.

How the system is actually built

Three parts do all the work.

• The channel or track. An aluminium or PVC profile screwed to the fascia, eave or soffit. It holds the pucks at a fixed spacing and shields them from weather and UV.
• The pucks. Sealed RGBW or RGBWW LED modules, spaced at set centres — commonly 4 to 6 inches depending on the system. Each one can be a different colour.
• The controller and power. A weather-rated supply and controller, usually in the garage or a protected exterior box, wired back to a standard outlet or a dedicated circuit.

What gets lit

Permanent lighting is made for straight, mountable runs — not for laying over a roof surface. Installers mount to:

• Front and side eaves, fascia and soffits
• Gable and rake edges
• Dormers, porch and portico trim
• Window and door trim, columns and pergolas

Rooftop ridges, shingle faces and unstructured areas are not mounting surfaces.

What it does day to day

1. Everyday lighting. Warm white along the eaves as low-level architectural and security lighting.
2. Holidays. Red and green, orange, red white and blue, pastels — scheduled by date without touching a ladder.
3. Events. School colours, birthdays, game nights, charity colours.
4. Automation. Sunset-to-bedtime schedules, motion triggers, and integration with the rest of your smart home.

How it differs from seasonal string lights

• It is installed once, by a professional, and stays put.
• No annual hanging cost and no yearly ladder work.
• Colour changes take seconds instead of an afternoon.
• The channel protects the diodes, so lifespan is measured in years of continuous seasons rather than one December.

What it costs, roughly

Pricing follows linear footage first, then complexity and system tier. Most single-storey front-elevation projects land in the low thousands; full wrap-arounds on complex multi-gable homes go considerably higher. Our cost guide breaks the numbers down.

Is it right for your home?

It fits best if you have accessible eave or fascia runs, you already pay someone to hang seasonal lights, or you want exterior lighting that works all year rather than six weeks. It fits poorly if your trim is failing — repair or repaint before anything gets screwed into it.
