Choosing a permanent lighting brand

We do not sell lights and we are not a dealer for anybody, so here is the honest version: most quality systems produce a similar result on a simple roofline. Differences show up in spacing, colour handling, control software and what happens when a part fails in year four.

The six specifications that matter

1. Puck spacing. Published centres, typically 4 to 6 inches. Tighter spacing blends colour better on curves and short runs.
2. Diode configuration. RGBW or RGBWW gives a genuinely usable warm white. RGB-only whites tend to look blue or greenish.
3. Channel and mounting. Whether the manufacturer sells a real mounting profile, and whether purpose-made brackets exist for your fascia type.
4. Controller and app. Scheduling, scenes, zones, offline behaviour, and whether it works with your smart home.
5. Warranty and parts. Length, what it covers, and how replacement pucks are obtained years from now.
6. Ingress and temperature rating. IP rating plus a working temperature range that matches your climate.

Questions worth asking your installer

• What spacing does this model use, and how many pucks will my runs take?
• Is this mounted in the manufacturer's channel or with third-party clips?
• Can I control zones separately — front, gables, porch?
• If a puck fails in three years, who supplies the replacement, and who fits it?

How to decide

1. Pick the two or three brands your matched installers actually stock.
2. Compare spacing and white quality, in person if you can — ask to see a night photo of a real local job.
3. Compare the total warranty picture, workmanship and manufacturer together.
4. Choose the app you will not mind using at 6pm in December.
